A picturesque lakeside city, perched on a boot-shaped peninsula.
Minnetonka Beach, Minnesota, is a tiny and picturesque lakeside city in Hennepin County perched on a boot-shaped peninsula of Lake Minnetonka about 30 minutes west of Minneapolis. With just a few hundred residents and a primarily residential character, it’s known for its scenic shoreline, open parkland, and historic vibe anchored by the Lafayette Club and St. Martin’s Church. Most properties enjoy direct lake access and the community maintains an intimate, village-like atmosphere surrounded on three sides by water.
The area’s history stretches back to the late 19th century when it served as one of Lake Minnetonka’s earliest resort enclaves. Platted and named Minnetonka Beach in 1883, it became home to the grand Hotel Lafayette in 1882—built under the patronage of railroad magnate James J. Hill—which helped cement the area as a summertime destination for the well-to-do. After the hotel burned in 1897, the site evolved into the Lafayette Club, whose clubhouse built in 1924 still stands. Minnetonka Beach was incorporated as an independent village in 1894 and today officially retains the name City of the Village of Minnetonka Beach, remaining one of Minnesota’s smallest incorporated cities while preserving its rich lakeside heritage.
