Cottagewood, Minnesota is a quaint, historic lakeside neighborhood in the city of Deephaven along the southern shores of Lake Minnetonka, celebrated for its tree-lined streets, more than 100 charming lakefront homes, and a strong sense of community that feels a bit like a small town by the water. Centered around the beloved Cottagewood General Store, a landmark gathering place serving coffee, treats, gifts, and community events, the area is popular with residents and visitors alike who enjoy the lake life, local parks, tennis courts, beaches, and scenic trails.
The history of Cottagewood dates back to 1876, when the land was platted by Susan and Samuel Gale to take advantage of Lake Minnetonka’s booming tourism of the late 19th century. During that era the community welcomed summer visitors, and in 1895 the Cottagewood General Store was established as a grocery for cottagers and hotel guests. Though the original hotel hotel buildings and later structures have changed over time, the general store remained a hub of life in the neighborhood. A tornado in 1965 and other challenges tested the community, and when the store closed in 1995, neighbors banded together to preserve it, leading to the creation of the Cottagewood Community Foundation to keep the historic store and its traditions alive.
